Abstract:

This data package contains the output of numerical simulations of oil spills in coastal regions of Florida and Texas in the Gulf of Mexico. These spills, simulated by the Blowout and Spill Occurrence Model (BLOSOM), vary by simulation location, the amount of oil released into the environment, and the time of oil release. The runs are based on the Navy Coastal Ocean Model (NCOM), a numerical ocean model that simulates the ambient ocean conditions at the time the spill was simulated.

Purpose:

This data was created in support of building a decision support system associated with response planning in the Gulf of Mexico.

Oil volume [m/s, gallons]; start time [string]; elapsed time of parcel [s]; elapsed time of simulation [s]; distance traveled (since last time step and cumulative, [m]), X and Y position [m]; latitude [decimal degrees], longitude [decimal degrees], parcel depth [m]; parcel velocity [m/s]; initial mass (parcel, cruise oil in parcel), [kg]; current mass (parcel, crude in parcel, entrained water in parcel), [kg]; density (initial partial, crude in parcel, emulsion in parcel), [kg/m^3]); droplet radius [m]; volume of parcel (initial, current), [m^3]; buoyancy velocity [m/s]; water rise velocity [m/s]; spreading area [m^2]; water content [%]; mass evaporated [kg]; crude cut masses [kg].

Methods:

The BLOSOM software is freely available and open source. The BLOSOM daily model output consists of individual oil parcels. The number of oil parcels dispersed over a given time is dependent on a user input flow rate (m/s). New parcels are created at a user defined time interval (i.e., every simulated 24 hours), but all mass balance equations and movements are computed at three-hour intervals. The parcels represent the extent of the oil patch over time (each with a unique size and mass) and can also be used to track the trajectories of individual parcels (position at times t and t-1). The Blowout and Spill Occurrence Model (BLOSOM) was used for the spill simulations. This software is freely available and open source.
